Open Days/Evenings

For 2011 entry, we are arranging the following events to allow prospective pupils and parents an opportunity to meet present pupils, staff and have a tour of the school:

11+ Open Morning on Wednesday 7 July 2010, 10.30am-12pm. This event is for current Year 5 pupils and their parents only. If your son is in Year 4 then please attend the October event as shown below. Places are limited and can be reserved by telephoning the school secretary on 01892 520732. Parking is not available on the school site. THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED. PLEASE ATTEND THE OCTOBER EVENTS.

The next Open Evening will be on Thursday 7 October 2010, 4pm-8pm. This event is usually very busy and consequently parking is not available on the school site. Visitors to the school are advised to park at the nearby John Street car park, or at Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School car parks (via Southfield Road, 5 minute walk to Skinners') or park in the town centre car parks (15 minute walk). Please be considerate to our neighbours and park responsibly.

We will also be holding an additional 11+ Open Morning on Thursday 14 October 2010, 10.30am-12pm aimed at Year 6 pupils only who were unable to attend the Open Evening. Places are limited and can be reserved by telephoning the school secretary on 01892 520732. Again, parking is not available on the school site.

2011 Sixth Form application

Applications for 2010 entry are now closed. To apply for 2011 entry then please either complete the application form and send it to the school office marked for the attention of Mr Craig Fleming, Head of Sixth Form or contact the school office on 01892 520732.  A copy of the application form can be found here. The closing date for applications for September 2011 entry is 31 December 2010. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

 Admissions Process
Boys will normally be admitted at age 11, and also to the Sixth Form. Selection is by reference to aptitude and ability. Those who attain the prescribed score in the Kent Selection Tests for Procedure to Entrance to Secondary School (PESE) will be considered for admission at age 11. For boys aged 12 or more, evidence obtained in examination of ability to keep pace with the work of the School will justify consideration for admission.

The School intends to offer 115 places each year for boys aged 11. The Year 7 cohort is divided into four forms of entry.

The 2011 Admissions Arrangements are set out here.
For admission to the Sixth Form from outside the School pupils are expected to have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade B or above.  In the event of over-subscription for Sixth Form places, those with the best academic record at GCSE will be admitted.

Priority will be given to existing pupils transferring from Year 11. The PAN for external candidates will be 1 but this figure may be exceeded in the event that this and the number of internal pupils transferring into Year 12 is less than is required to provide an overall total figure for the Sixth Form, which is 230. Please be aware that only a very small number of sixth form places are offered each year.

Those interested in applying for a place in the sixth-form (September 2011 entry) should apply directly to the Head of Sixth Form at the School by 31 December 2010 (click here). A copy of the sixth-form prospectus can be downloaded here.

For entry at age eleven, parents need to complete Kent County Council’s Secondary Common Application (SCAF) Form, or else the Common Application Form supplied by their own LEA, if they do not live in Kent. For 2011 entry, the closing date for 11+ registration is 2 July 2010. Please refer to the key dates below (click here for the link to the KCC document).

Parents are entitled to name up to four schools in an order of preference. The LEA will place the pupil in the most preferred school to which the pupil has gained admission. If a pupil has decided that Skinners' School is their preferred choice, it is important that the school is placed as their first choice. For further details on KCC Admissions to Secondary Schools in Kent 2009/10 click on the following link. Once we have 2010/11 details from KCC then we will update this link.

2.         Over-Subscription

Where the number of applicants for admission at age 11 exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied, in the order of priority set out below:

a)         Children in Local Authority Care, defined as a child under the age of 18 years for whom the Local Authority provides accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers (section 22 of the Children’s Act 1989) or who is subject of a care order under Part IV of the Act.

b)         Applicants will be ranked according to their combined test scores.

c)         In the case of two applicants of equal ability, preference will be given to the boy who lives closest to the School. The distance is measured between the child’s permanent address and the school measured in a straight line using Ordnance Survey address point data. Distances are measured from a central point within the child’s home to a similarly defined point within the school as specified by Ordnance Survey. The school uses measurements provided by the LA and further information on how distances are calculated is available in the Admissions Booklets provided by the LA.

The school sends the list of pupil rankings to the LEA in January 2010. The LEA receives a list from each secondary school. When a pupil could be offered a place by more than one school, the school which was ranked higher on the Common Application Form will take the pupil.

Offer letters are sent out by the LEA on 1 March 2010. Parents should reply to Skinners' by 26 March 2010.  When places are declined and vacancies exist at the school a waiting list system is then applied.

The School will operate a waiting list for pupils who are not offered places in the first round of allocations.   Parents who wish to have their son considered by the School in the reallocation process must inform the School that they wish to be placed on the waiting list.  Prospective candidates on the waiting list will be ranked according to the school's entrance criteria.  As soon as a vacancy occurs, it will be filled by the candidate at the top of the waiting list. Parents of eligible pupils who are denied a place, have a right of appeal.
