computing and ict

Information and Communications Technology is becoming an increasingly more important subject with technology playing a part in almost every aspect of modern life. The KS3 ICT course aims to familiarise pupils with the world of Information and Communication Technology. Pupils are taught formally in Years 7, 8 and 9 and will investigate the working of networks, learn the skills of word processing, desktop publishing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics and presentation software and develop their understanding of ICT. Pupils are introduced to programming and control systems using LOGO, FLOWOL and Insight. These courses provide a good basis for the development of cross-curricular ICT skills for all subjects in the National Curriculum.

At Key Stage 4, the GCSE ICT Course is very popular and follows the AQA specification. ICT is also available for pupils to further their studies into AS and A2 with a small number of pupils able to study Computing as an extra-curriculum club. Both Computing and ICT are exciting and the new AQA specification will certainly provide a stimulating course. The department runs Computer Clubs at lunchtimes for supervised activities where students are able to enhance their skills and use other hardware, software and programming languages.

The department has two rooms dedicated to the teaching of ICT and Computing. Filtered broadband internet access is available for all pupils for both independent and subject specific research. The department oversees the use of a cross-curricular ICT room that also contains 30 workstations. It is used by other departments to enhance the delivery of their curriculum using ICT.
