learning support

Our AEN (Additional Educational Needs) Department focuses on identifying, assessing and making provision for pupils with special needs, particularly those with spelling, literacy and social and communication difficulties. Individual programmes are devised by the SENCO and largely delivered by her, as a Specialist Teacher, on a one to one basis or in small groups.

The department is also able to draw upon outside specialists for speech and language as required, a counsellor has been appointed to deal with social/emotional/behavioural issues on a one to one basis for as long as individual pupils require such support. The pupil may self refer or be referred by staff or parent.

Any child with a physical disability, with or without a statement, receives specialist attention and monitoring from the department. Mrs Field, who is a qualified assessor, is able to formally assess pupils for Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and other conditions. Pupils who are identified with a specific learning difficult that will impact on their exam performance may qualify for special arrangements for exams such as an additional time allocation. For those with writing difficulties for whom a laptop is recommended, a programme of touch typing lessons is available.

The SEN office is always welcoming and accessible and boys are encouraged to drop in at break times, lunchtimes and immediately after school if they have any concerns or require support, whether formal or informal.
