Teacher of PE / Head of Academic PEBack
We seek an enthusiastic and organised teacher of PE to join a very successful department in a school that places a high premium on sport and PE. It is hoped that the successful applicant will also be able to lead the school’s Academic PE provision.
Skinners’ is renowned for its sport, and the enthusiasm of its pupils is extraordinary. The school competes at a high level in a huge array of sports, from the traditional – rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, cross-country running and athletics – to a significant number of indoor sports – basketball, badminton, table tennis, handball and swimming. Team sports therefore abound and it is not unusual, for example, for the school to put out over 15 rugby teams at the weekend. Nevertheless, there remains untapped potential, and we are looking for someone who will help drive development of our provision at performance and participation level. The extra-curricular life of the school is a key aspect of this role: involvement at weekends and willingness to participate in a busy school sports calendar is essential.
Our core PE curriculum runs from Years 7 to 11 and follows a curriculum that exposes all pupils to wide array of sports, and to the key principles of sports science and healthy living. We teach GCSE PE and a good number of pupils train to be Sports Leaders in the Sixth Form. Again, there is further potential to develop in our pupils a cutting edge understanding of the role of sport and exercise in the 21st Century.
The school is blessed with a superb Sports Hall that is exceptionally well-equipped, including a classroom and an outstanding fitness suite and weights room (both renovated in April 2025). The Sports Hall sits alongside an astroturf area that accommodates three tennis courts and a small hockey pitch. Twenty acres of sports pitches are a short walk from the school: every year group has a games afternoon once a week. Southfields comprises five rugby pitches, three cricket grounds and a football pitch.
Ideally, the successful applicant will lead the delivery of GCSE Physical Education at Skinners’, ensuring high academic standards and overseeing relevant administrative duties. This includes the management of the non-examined assessment (coursework and practical).
Having the knowledge and understanding to coach at least one of our major sports (rugby, football, hockey, cricket) to a high level is also desirable.
