Teacher of History (maternity cover)Back
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic History teacher, with the ability to teach bright pupils from Key Stage 3 to A level, to join a dedicated and successful team of five specialist teachers. The successful applicant will also have the prospect of teaching highly motivated and academically accomplished students from Year 7 to Oxbridge. This is a fixed term contract from September 2026 to May 2027.
History is taught to all pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9, and is an option thereafter at GCSE and A level. In Years 7 and 8 pupils study a broad sweep of the period 1066-to the modern day, including the Middle Ages, Tudor and Stuart periods, the British Empire and Multiculturalism in the United Kingdom. In Year 9 the focus shifts to the two world wars and Nazi Germany.
In Years 10 and 11, we teach the Edexcel GCSE History course, which includes units on the Cold War, Elizabethan England and Crime and Punishment (c.1000-present). At A level, students study the Edexcel course completing units on Early Modern British history (1625-1715), the Russian/French Revolution and American Civil Rights. They also undertake a coursework study on the Holocaust.
Politics A level was introduced at Skinners’ in September 2015. We follow the Edexcel Government and Politics course, focusing on the UK system in Year 12 and Global Politics in Year 13. Classics A level was introduced in September 2019 and includes units on the Odyssey and Aeneid, Imperial Image in the reign of Augustus and Greek Religion.
The successful candidate will also be expected to make a significant contribution to the department’s field work. History trips take Year 7 to Battle and Bodiam, Year 9 to the WW1 Battlefields and the Imperial War Museum, Year 11 to Berlin and the Sixth Form to Krakow and Auschwitz. Learning about History outside the classroom is an essential feature of what we do. There is also a thriving lower school History Club and separate History and Politics Societies in the Sixth Form. Helping to run lunchtime and after school clubs would be expected.
There are four well-equipped, adjacent specialist teaching rooms for History, each equipped with interactive whiteboards. Banks of laptops are available for booking by any department and are readily used by History.
The successful applicant will be an outstanding teacher with excellent subject knowledge supported by a good honours degree in History or a related subject. ECTs and experienced teachers are welcome to apply. The ability to form good working relationships with colleagues and students is essential. It is also hoped that the successful candidate will become involved in the school’s very wide range of extra-curricular activities.
